Twitter entices advertisers, branding is made easy on Facebook, Pinterest recommendations, and more

written by:

This week’s Social Media Recap is chock full of great stuff. First up is Twitter’s new campaign tools which target your ads based on Interests, Device Or Sex. In addition to the targeting options, Twitter has opened up its advanced campaign tools to all US advertisers.

Facebook wants you to personalize your profile so they’re making it easy. You can now change your cover photo on your iPhone.

Google+ says they know you want to capture images of your hangouts not just video so they’ve made the Hangouts Capture ap. With it you can take pictures of your Hangouts-in-progress, including a number of features not available in the usual screenshot workarounds. Google says it will soon be worldwide, and I normally only talk about things that launch during the week but it was too cool not to mention.

Pinterest acquired the Livestar team. Livestar is a recommendations mobile app. I think it would be awesome if you could receive recommendations when you were pinning on Pinterest. Really excited to see what they come up with.

But the highlight of the week goes to Twitter because they turned 7 this week. Twitter created a great video highlighting the biggest events since 2006 as they were told through tweets, check it out below!

Three benefits for using Google+ Hangouts

written by:

What is that? Great question! A Google+ Hangout is a video-conference tool powered by Google. If you have a Gmail account you have a Google+ account, you just need to activate it. It’s as easy as 1-2-3.

Participating in a Hangout lets you see everyone you are talking to on one screen, up to nine people. Why would you want to video-conference instead of doing a conference call?

Here are 3 reasons why:
1. Face recognition: Being able to see who you are talking to helps reinforce the relationship you have with that person, or helps you build a relationship faster. Seeing their face will make it easier to connect with them online in other social networks. This is a great tool to use with clients and prospects.

2. Facial expressions: Being able to see how someone expresses the message they are delivering is much easier on video than it is over the phone. This also helps you in the same way. Isn’t it easier to sell your products in person than it is on the phone?

3. Show you care: When someone asks me to video chat, and actually looks at me the whole time I’m talking, I am impressed. How often do you do a call with a client or friend, and end up multi-tasking by sending emails while you’re on the phone. Your clients deserve your attention, show them.

I recently participated in a Google+ Hangout to share tips for new IFA Attendees with Deb Evans, Lorri Wyndham, and Liz Anderson. You can watch the recording here:

Managing Your Online Reputation. Step Two: Check the Google+ Box Now!

written by:

Last week, we talked about being present and responding to issues on the social channels where your customers live. Next, you need to begin to publish content that will improve your reputation. The most important place to post this content is Google+.

Google Plus? What about Twitter and Facebook?!?!

Sure, you need to post content there too, and any other social channels where your customers and potential customers are. But from an online reputation viewpoint, there is no more important place to put content in 2013 than Google+.

Let’s take a step back and talk not about your current Facebook, but about the people who have not yet Liked your page. In fact, I am guessing that there are almost 900 Million people who have not yet Liked your page. You can tell the greatest stories, share the most interesting content, and give away the secrets of life on your Fan Page and none of those people will ever see it.

But many of them – in fact most of them search the internet using Google. They will see your Google+ page appear in their Google search results if they search something close to your topic, industry, brand, keyword, or place. Google+ page results show up on the top of the stack on Google searches.

Jessica Rowe, Senior Manager – New Media at Pioneer Services says, “We use Google+ for SEO purposes. We update and add content because of Google’s reliance on their platform for social signals, not because we believe we will build an engaged and active audience there.

What content do I put on Google+?

That’s the easy part. Put everything you put on your Facebook Fan Page onto your Google+ Page as well! Status updates, photos, videos, links – anything you put on Facebook should go onto Google+ too.

Don’t create additional content specific for Google+. Don’t worry that it’s yet another social network that will suck time out of your day. Just post your Facebook content there too.

At Engage121, we call this “checking the Google+ box” as we have built into our social management application the ability to populate your content to Facebook, Google+, and dozens of other channels simultaneously but simply checking a box. Shoot me an email or a Tweet if you want to see the details.

Isn’t that over-sharing?

If you find out that you have customers who simultaneously read your Facebook Page and your Google+ Page, then drop everything and drive to their house with a bouquet of flowers!

Why Google thinks you should use Google+

written by:

This week we announced that Engage121 now supports Google+ pages and to help us roll out the importance of using Google+ to our clients, Google held a webinar for us today showing the benefits.

I took pictures of the slides and I will caption a summary under each of them below. My main takeaway from this webinar is to absolutely make sure you are adding the +1 buttons to your website or blog. +1s and shares are showing up in search on Google. Let your customers see their friend’s recommendations of your products and services, and help you find new customers.

My 2nd takeaway is Google+ Ripples, which I did not know about before today. Ripples helps you identify your brand influencers and it looks a lot like the twitter clouds that highlight what words you are tweeting the most.

Google said that you should use Hangouts to increase engagement. Here Starbucks held a Google+ Hangout with Maroon 5 and put the hangout everywhere, Google+, Starbucks.com, and their social networks to encourage engagement from their followers.

One creative idea for using Google+ hangouts for your business is how JCrew uses hangouts. JCrew lets customers do a Google+ hangout to shop bridesmaid dresses with all of their bridesmaids no matter where they live.

The biggest takeaway, and my main selling point of Google+ is the +1 button. This button allows your followers, customers and prospects to share your content and help influence how you show up in search. Add this button to your website, blog or both.

I didn’t catch this slide, but I did hear that +1 buttons are somehow added to your AdWords campaigns, and those analytics are now showing up in your AdWords account.

I can’t recall what was discussed for this slide. What I think I heard is that Google is able to calculate ROI with your analaytics from Google+. I can’t provide much more insight than that.

My favorite discovery today was Ripples, which allows you to identify your brand influencers on Google+. I haven’t used this yet but that’s what I’m going to do as soon as I publish this blog, stay tuned.

This was the strategy that Google discussed on the webinar for brands using Google+.

Their big final point was that more features are coming, and to prove that they referenced Google+ communities which they just launched this week. I’ve had the pleasure of joining a few communities and I give them a +1.

Overall it was a great presentation, I learned something new – Ripples, and I got a refresher on a few things. If you’re looking to improve your search rankings on Google then Google+ is your first step in achieving that goal.

Is your business on Google+?

Do you Google+?

written by:

Do you? Almost everyone uses Google to search the web, but have you ventured to the “other” side of Google? The plus (+) side?

There are many benefits for going to the “plus” side, some are:

• Google+ results may appear in relevant searches.
• When you +1 an article, your friends may be able to see your recommendation when they search.
• Google+ Circles provides an excellent platform to segment
your audience.
• Google+ showcases Zagat ratings on local restaurants
and much more…

In fact, the opinions of friends, family or other trusted sources are often the first we seek when looking for the perfect restaurant for date night or the cafe that makes the best latte ever. —Google

But what does this have to do with Google+ for business? Well, if you add the +1 or Google+ share buttons to your website/blog, this enables your visitors to rate and share your content on Google. Social Media is based on friend’s recommendations, and your customers should be able to see those recommendations if they’re logged into their Google+ account.

If you search for [tacos] on Google+ Local, your results might include a friend’s rave review of the Baja-style taco stand in your neighborhood.  And if you’re searching on Google or Google Maps for a great place to buy a gift for that same friend, your results might include a review from her about a boutique she shops at all the time. —Google

Google+ now in Engage121

It’s not Facebook. Google+ doesn’t have as many active users as Facebook, but this is Google we’re talking about and they basically own the web in terms of search. If you’re looking to improve SEO for your business, this should be a no-brainer.

…and it gets easier. Engage121 now supports Google+ pages. Only 17 applications have the Google+ API and we’re one of them! Although, we’re not  here to brag, we’re announcing this today because we’re excited to show our clients how they can  improve their SEO and gain better brand awareness through Social Media by using Google+.

Google+

What will you be able to access in Engage121 in relation to your Google+ page?

Weekly Social Media Roundup, April 13th

written by:

Lots of news this week in the world of Social Media. Facebook buys Instagram for $1 BILLION, LinkedIn is making their platform better for marketers, and Google+ copies its competition! Did I miss anything?

Also in honor of the Instagram news I’ve applied a visual effect to my YouTube video. What do you think?

Social Media enables us to “tell a story” about our brands like no other platform can.

written by:

Guy Kawasaki (former executive for Apple) was “awe-inspiring” at IFA, driving “real” meaning to the Social Media discussion and debate over usability.  He explained social media “practically” and elaborated on how social media enables us to “tell a story” about our brands like no other platform can.

He began by explaining that to transform your brand into a masterpiece, such as Apple did, your brand must successfully accomplish three factors in the social media: Likeability, Trustworthiness and Quality.

Guy suggested that by using these three factors, you can add personality to your brand and emotionally touch your consumer. As all of us iPhone users know, we do not own an iPhone exclusively for its millions of apps that enhance our lives, but because of the sleek and elegant design. It’s sexy; it makes us feel sexy, intelligent, productive and successful. The aura around Apple products makes you feel that you will not live another day if you do not own one. As brand proprietors, we should all aspire to do this for our brands.

You might ask…How was that message conveyed when it is attached to a piece of technology? By putting a story behind the message and finding the right people to tell that story; not just twitter users with 10,000+ followers, but those with only fifteen.  They are the tweeps who have the time to write about your product and become passionate about your brand.

Guy also mentioned, “Solving problems”. Guy explains the Apple problem/solution… “You’ve created your computer company because the only way you could access a computer was to visit a library, you thought there must be a better way, so you launched Apple.” Your computer company has just solved an everyday problem.

Guy also explained the importance of input and reciprocation.  Start with asking your customers for their support, even if they’ve already given it to you. After they’ve re-tweeted you, proceed to say thank you, then tweet them a link to a customer survey. People want to help you; you just need to let them know how. They want to feel that their input matters and is valued.  After you’ve received their input, keep in mind, it’s CRITICAL to reciprocate… ask how you might help them; this becomes your opening to the continuing dialogue.

A few more takeaways:
ENGAGE & DO IT FAST: Each post lasts 2-3 hours, so hurry!
SELL YOUR DREAM: Enchant your customer; don’t focus on money/product dump; tell a STORY to sell your product.
REMOVE THE SPEED BUMPS: Make it easy for your customer to connect with you, especially online.

“Social Media is a means to an end; the end game is enchantment of your customer.  Social Media isn’t the only way, it’s ONE GREAT way.”

I would love to hear your takeaways, please post them below.

Google+

written by:

Our clients are asking what will Google+ mean to the social landscape?

Our CEO, Jon Victor, is quoted in an article by Ryan Doran in Westfair Online, Adding a Social Channel

Here is our perspective and some article highlights:

Anytime Google talks, everyone listens.  Its sheer size creates waves.  However, this is not the first time that Google has entered the social space (Google Wave and Buzz were previous attempts) and now Facebook, with 750 million users is clearly a formidable opponent.

So in spite of the fact that Google+ has some great features and is well positioned to leverage its communications platforms like Gmail, those features are probably not enough to convince consumers to leave Facebook in droves – at least not now.   Jon states in the article, “Consumers conspire to create monopolies.”  It can be difficult for consumers to change from their standard-use channel even if there are other technologies out there.  “Today the standard is Facebook,” and “No one wants to transfer all of their pictures and content to another platform.”

But perhaps there is a major advantage for Google+ if it takes a different tack.  “If Google+ tried to do exactly what Facebook does then those needs are served,” said Victor.  “The next generation for Facebook is e-commerce. Facebook is already becoming a giant, worldwide shopping mall open 24-7.  However Facebook is a novice in e-commerce.  Google is an expert.  Google facilitates more e-commerce than the rest of the entire web combined.  If Google takes the e-commerce path with their social networking then they could gain parity in the long-run; if they play the exact same game as Facebook, then no chance.”

At Engage121, we are rooting for Google+ as we know we provide great value in aggregating all of the platforms for our clients.  For more insights on Google+ read the entire article here .
